Tips & Tricks to Pack a Suitcase for a Trip

I recently headed across the country for a business trip. I enjoy traveling and seeing new places and treasure the opportunities…even if I do end up being stuck in a meeting room for 10+ hours a day once I get there for work-related ventures. On my most recent trip, a co-worker mentioned she was impressed by my ability to pack all of my meeting materials, laptop, and personal luggage into my small suitcase and carry-on bag. I hadn’t really thought about it before, but I do have a few tips and tricks when I travel.

Tips & Tricks for Packing for a Trip: Toiletries
Tip 1. Contact lens cases aren’t just for contacts.

Contact Lens Case

For a short trip, fill one side with your favorite shampoo, the other with conditioner. Or face lotion in one, eye cream in the other. A container like this is $2.00 or less. And a bonus is it’s way under the 3 oz carry-on limit for liquids. Just wash and reuse for the next trip.

Tip 2. Bagettes!

Bagettes

Bagettes are a brand of reclosable 2×3″ or 3×5″ plastic bags you can find at craft stores. These are perfect for storing hair clips, vitamins, jewelry, paper clips, or any other small items. Being a bag, they’ll store flat and take up less space than a small plastic container for instance. Again, a cost of only $2.00 for 200 bags.

Tip 3. Leave your hair dryer at home. I know, there can be an emotional attachment between you and the appliance that prepares your locks for the day, but almost all hotels have hair dryers in the room these days. Plus, some will upgrade you to a nicer model for free if you request one from the front desk. Just make sure to confirm on your hotel’s website before traveling a dryer is included in the room.

Tip 4. Pack non-liquid alternatives that multi-task for you; such as lathering cleansing cloths that you just add water to. These take up minimal space and can easily be packed in a plastic ziplock bag.

Johnson\'s Head-to-toe Washcloths

I like Johnson’s Baby Head-To-Toe Washcloths that contain a mild cleanser that can be used to wash your face, body, and hair if you desire, all from one cloth once you add water to it.

Tip 5. Use the “every 3 days rule.” Is it an item you use every day? Pack it, but with travel convenience in mind. Is it something you don’t use every day, but may use every 3 days? Decide on its importance. Is it something you use maybe once a week? Do not pack these items. If push comes to shove, your hotel or a nearby store will likely have what you need. If you normally use it so infrequently, can you just live without it for a little longer than normal?

Tips & Tricks for Packing for a Trip: Clothes & Shoes
Tip 6. Pack clothing made from silk. It’s lightweight, packs small, and stays amazingly wrinkle-free.

Tip 7. If anything you’ve packed does become wrinkled, hang in the bathroom while you take a shower with the door closed. The steam should help to release wrinkles, if you prefer it to ironing to save time and effort.

Tip 8. Only pack 2 pairs of shoes. One work-appropriate pair and one comfortable pair for travel that’s a bit nicer than sneakers, just in case you need to toss them on if something happens to your professional pair. Ideally your comfy pair should be slip ons for airport security areas.

Tip 9. Mix and match your outfits. A nice pair of black pants can be worn twice or more, just mix it up with different tops and a different pair of pants or skirt every other day. Cardigan sweaters or a jacket can be worn with more than one outfit if the color is compatible.

Tip 10. Pack a small purse in your suitcase with valuables like your wallet and cell phone removed and placed in your carry-on laptop bag during travel time. It’s one less thing to carry and worry about when you’re on the go. Simply remove from your suitcase and reload once you arrive at your destination.

Safe and happy travels! Remember to stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water and carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer (3 oz or less) to use during your trip, to help stay healthy and full of energy on your adventure.
